Old Gun

Ground up residence, nestled in a gently rolling, old growth forest near the James River. A home woven into its surrounding trees, limiting the impact wrought on this beautiful forest. A home that honors the sacrifice the land makes to the building, a home that hopefully makes its place better not worse for it existing. A weighty, horizontal roof acts as a counter balance to the strong verticals of the forest of 100-year-old white oaks, tulip poplars and beech trees.

We seek to design within the question of “what is appropriate?” What is appropriate for this forest, what is appropriate for the Capital region, what is appropriate for our climate. Will materials last. Will they improve with time? Place matters.

Estimated Completion: Winter 2026
