A garden designed to create a sheltered, intimate space in the heart of the Fans density. Conceived as a beautiful ruin, a secret space you stumble upon that's been left to mature and overgrow. The understory plantings, wild and unrestrained, bring energy and tension, while ‘hedge’ 16’ Columnar Hornbeams bring order and structure, extending the garden into the sky, making the small garden feel expansive. Mid-story plantings of tree-form hydrangeas help break the verticality to define an intimate, human scale, while the dark slate stained fencing retreats into the background deepening the space.
White cement parged walls, honed granite and natural cleft limestone were chosen to create an atmosphere of solidity and timelessness while staying cool through the hot, sunny Virginia summers.

"With its solid forms and natural features, the garden has an authentic feel - as though is has always been there and will always be."
