429

The sister garden to 431, designed to be a sunny, colorful extension of the owner's home: a space to gather and lounge. The coral green of the interior walls spill out into the garden, blurring the edges between interior and exterior. The lower porch extension creates a threshold, a gradual entrance into the space. At the end a raised patio of white cement bricks define a shaded seating area against the brick wall. Place your back against the shaded brick and you can feel the stored coolness.

There's a repeated sense of movement, a flow of material through the garden. The upturned patio stone creates bed edging, the waterfall IPE deck screen, angled garden beds welcoming and directing you, a metal climbing trellis flowing over fence corners…

Plantings are evergreen and flowerful, ferns, edible fruits, seasonal fall flowering bulbs, self seeding annuals in a mix of garden beds and pots with a river birch at its center. Evoking a restrained cottage garden, in time the plantings will begin to push into the space creating tension between garden and patio.

A sunnier garden, the light thermalled bluestone, silvered IPE and white cement keep the garden cool during the height of the Virginia summers.

Estimated Completion: Summer 2025
